This Friday 'most popular day for weddings'

This Friday will be the most popular date this year for couples to tie the knot, according to new research.

An online survey by hitched.co.uk found that Friday's date – the eighth of the eighth 2008 – has been picked by brides and grooms-to-be because it's a memorable date.

Of the 1,570 registered Friday weddings throughout this year, 12.4 per cent of them will be taking place on this date.

Neither the bride nor the groom will have any excuse to forget anniversary presents as married life goes on.

The figure eight is also an extremely lucky one, according to many traditions. For Asian weddings, the number eight sounds like the words wealth and prosper and so it is considered a very lucky number.

In Judaism, the festival of Hanukkah lasts for eight days, while eight is also the symbol for infinity, rotated 90 degrees.

The popularity of the date is also interesting because Saturday weddings are four times more popular than Friday weddings, but yet August 8th is more popular than Saturday, August 9th.
