Happy day for tragic couple
A Swansea man has married his long-term partner just a fortnight after being told he had 12 months to live.
Father of two Andrew McCarthy was told eight years ago that he had a benign tumour in his brain. After a series of scans, doctors recently found that this has now become cancerous.
Upon being delivered the news, the 40-year-old immedately proposed to his partner of 11 years, Nicola Williams.
The couple tied the knot at Saint Teilo's Church in Portmead, where his friends sprung a surprise on the groom.
Mr McCarthy is an avid Swansea City fan and was surprised to discover that the club's defender Marcos Painter was a guest at the ceremony.
The Swans player brought a card signed by the team's coach Roberto Martinez.
Thirty six year old Mrs McCarthy took a year off from her job at Tesco to care for her husband, as his condition became debilitating.
Describing the discovery of the tumour, she also told the South Wales Evening Post that she was determined to make the rest of his days as enjoyable as possible.
"He needed to have a biopsy and he found out he had cancer of the brain - he's been given nine to 12 months to live," she explained.
After the ceremony, she said: "I was just glad I could make a happy day for him.
"I was upset on leaving the house and crying when I arrived at the church but I had to keep it together."
