Wayne and Coleen tie the knot

Wayne Rooney has married his childhood sweetheart Coleen McLoughlin in a private ceremony on the Italian Riviera, according to media reports.

The Manchester United and England striker is said to have wed his new wife in Santa Margherita Ligure, against the backdrop of the 300-year-old Villa Durazzo.

Coleen and Wayne are reported to have spent more than £5 million on their nuptials, half of which will be recouped from and exclusive photograph deal with OK!

The villa they chose is near the town of Genoa, overlooking the Mediterranean, and was used by Rod Stewart last June for his marriage to third wife Penny Lancaster.

The newlyweds are both 22 and have been together for around five years.

The news agency ANSA reports that the young love birds threw a reception at the ancient abbey of La Cervara after the wedding on Thursday, and soldiered on despite poor weather.

Watching from the clifftop abbey, which was built in 1361, the Rooneys and close friends witnessed a huge fireworks display at the stroke on midnight.

Guests included Manchester United colleagues John O'Shea and Wes Brown as well as former Everton team mate Duncan Ferguson.

Wayne and Coleen are believed to have had a catholic blessing from a Liverpool priest in the morning, reinforced by a civil ceremony conducted by the deputy mayor of the town.ADNFCR-1121-ID-18637473-ADNFCR
