Corporate events management firm Green Events Source is encouraging organisers to host green events to coincide with Earth Day.
Designating April as the 'Host a Green Event Month', the firm is urging businesses, associations and individuals to adopt environmentally-friendly practices.
The call for more eco awareness is timed to coincide with Earth Day, a celebration in the US of mother nature and steps consumers can take to stave off global warming.
"Meetings, conferences, expos, trade shows and other special events are some of the largest producers of waste and greenhouse gas emissions," said Deborah Popley, founder of Green Events Source.
She cited estimates which show that only building and construction produce more carbon emissions than international events and conferences.
"By following even a few simple green meeting practices, organisers can significantly reduce the negative environmental impact that occurs any time you bring people together in a group."
The green events specialist recommends doing as much online as possible, such as emailing invitations and distributing handouts electronically to avoid using excess paper.
She also encouraged conserving water, by providing glasses or refillable sports bottles and pitchers at water stations. Styrofoam containers and disposable utensils are discouraged.
Facilitating recycling with collection points and printing material on recycled paper are two further steps that can help make a difference.
Finally, Ms Popley believes guests should be encouraged to use public transport, carpools or bikes to travel. If flying is necessary, then carbon offsetting initiatives should be advertised.
