Bosses worried about the effects of Christmas

The vast majority of bosses are concerned about the number of sick days their employees will take over the festive period.

A survey by HR company Youmanage revealed that 92 per cent of managers are worried about the likely number of sick or duvet days in the run-up to Christmas.

The study also found that 85 per cent of bosses worry about whether or not to hold an office Christmas party, while 77 per cent said they have concerns about handling the fall-out from the party.

Concerns about a loss of productivity as employees do their shopping online at work also featured among managers' worries.

Phil Brown, managing director of Youmanage, said: "The survey's results were fascinating and a real insight into the complexity of today’s workplace, where managers spend the run-up to Christmas worrying about such diverse things as handling excessive sick days and whether to hold a Christmas party.

"It also showed that Christmas can be a double edged sword for most managers and how they handle the season's multiple challenges can have a year-long impact. Celebrating at work is a great opportunity to foster goodwill and build relationships within a company, but handled poorly, the results of the festive season's celebrations can be additional stress and tension."
