Look for a 'good story' when choosing corporate event speakers

If you are holding a corporate event for your staff then make sure you make the right choice for a motivational speaker, the Financial Times reports.

Keynote speakers are often the highlight of the corporate event, but choosing either the wrong one or someone that the employees cannot relate to can put a dampener on the evening.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Stephen Flynn, corporate events manager at Allianz Insurance, said he always looks for a speaker with a good story.

He said: "The ones that work the best are those that are unusual enough to grab the imagination but generic enough that you can relate to them."

Past successful speakers at the insurance company's corporate events have included rugby player Brian Moore and author Geoff Burch.

Professionals say that a good story can help to motivate those at corporate events regardless of how famous the person is.

Mike Mair, head of training in product and supply chain at Cambridge-based Napp Pharmaceuticals, told the newspaper: "As long as the story is relevant and they are good enough, a variety of people can work. We have had seven external speakers in and not everyone is going to love all of them. That is why you need a range."
