A special event has been held to mark the 140th anniversary of the opening of the Metropolitan Meat and Poultry Market at Smithfield.
More than 600 guests were invited to A Banquet at Smithfield, which took place on Friday, November 28th.
The event was held in the Grand Avenue and the public walkway was "transformed into a special banqueting hall".
It was attended by Ian Luder, the Lord Mayor of London, the Lord Mayors of Dublin and Liverpool, as well as the Lord Lieutenant and Lord Provost of Edinburgh.
Lord Mayor Luder said that it was very important to honour the rich history of the trading place.
He commented: "Smithfield Market is a unique gem of the City with a long trading history of 800 years.
"This is a special occasion for us to pause for just a moment in the midst of the financial turmoil and celebrate the best of Britain - the fact that this world-renowned Smithfield Market will continue to supply the best quality meat products throughout the country for many years to come."
