According to a new study from the University of Florida, organising social events for office staff can boost morale and improve individual productivity.
The study, carried out by Erin Fluegge Woolf as part of her doctoral research, found that involving employees with fun social activities, light-hearted corporate events or even the occasional harmless prank, can do wonders for the company as a whole.
Miss Fluegge Woolf, now a professor of management at Southeast Missouri State University, told Cathy Keen at newswire.org: "With people spending more and more of their lives at work, they feel they might as well make it enjoyable, and our study finds surprising payoffs when they do."
The then-student's initial idea was inspired by her own pranks carried out on her colleagues, and her realisation that no real research had been done to try to evaluate what effects light-hearted office behaviour has on the office employee.
The study distinguishes between fun events that truly encompass all staff, and more forced occasions when employers may not give much thought as to the best way to reach out to their staff.
