Conservative conference to boost local economy

The local economy of the West Midlands will likely receive a boost to the tune of £20 million when Birmingham hosts the Conservative Party conference in September.

Around 20,000 attendees, including party delegates and journalists from across the globe, will need places to eat, sleep, work and wind down over the course of the four-day conference, which will be much like a corporate event for the British political arena. The Hyatt Hotel and the ICC will accommodate many of the guests, while local businesses will see an increase in trade.

Nick Waight, managing director of the ICC, told birminghampost.net: "Welcoming 10,000 delegates to Birmingham is fantastic news for us, and we will do everything possible to make it a great success."

Promotional campaigns advertising Birmingham as a city will be targeted specifically at delegates, and conference attendees will be encouraged to make use of local resources and corporate services.

City officials will use the event to maximise Birmingham's international profile throughout the conference.
