Marriott hotel cuts trans-fats

Upmarket hotel chain Marriott has become the first large hotel chain to ban the use of trans-fats in its cooking, it has been reported.

The decision comes in the wake of a spate of reports which reveal that Britain is suffering from an obesity epidemic.

A number of big name restaurants and hospitality companies have banned trans-fats in a bid to help reduce the problem.

Trans-fatty acids can be found in processed foods and consuming too high an amount can lead to increased cholesterol levels and up the chances of contracting heart disease.

Gregg Brown, director of culinary development at the Marriott UK, said: "Many of the products we use are already trans-fat free but we wanted to take this further step of using trans-fat free oils in our cooking preparation."

As a replacement, the Marriott has been trialling trans-fat free oils.
