Riverside hosts corporate event for cancer charity

The home of Premier Division side Middlesbrough played host last week to a charity fundraiser between two teams of local industry executives.

Officiated by professional referees, the match at the Riverside was organised by Glamal Engineering, a company based in Billingham, which put forward a team of employees coached by former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe.

Their opponents were made up of leading figures from the local oil and gas industry, managed by Sunderland reserve team coach Kevin Richardson, formerly of Arsenal.

The charity match was staged in order to raise funds and awareness for the Holistic Cancer Care Centre in Middlesbrough, which specialises in supportive therapies such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy.

"This is the first time the football club has given permission for the pitch to be used for a corporate event, but we were happy to support Glamal as the match will raise awareness of the Holistic Cancer Care Centre and raise much needed funds to support its work in the community," said Boro manager Gareth Southgate.

"I wish both teams the best of luck and hope they enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience," he said before the game.

Glamal director Clark Burnett added: "We hope the event will raise vital funds to help the charity to continue to provide the much needed services it offers.

"That we can support the centre and fulfill childhood dreams along the way is an added bonus."

The Northern Echo reports the corporate event, which included a post-match gala at the stadium including a charity raffle, raised at least £4,000 for the local cancer care centre.ADNFCR-1121-ID-18606118-ADNFCR
