Brits don't like their Christmas gifts, says survey

The majority of Britons get presents they do not like or want at Christmas, according to a new survey.

A poll commissioned by Barclays Gift Card found that, while 450 million presents are likely to be bought this year, 87 per cent of people will not be happy with them.

Nearly half of those polled said that they had hidden unwanted gifts away in a loft or cupboard, while a further 43 per cent said they had taken the presents down to their local charity shop.

Almost a third take their unwanted presents back to the shop to try and get a refund, while 38 per cent of resourceful Britons give the gifts they don't want to other people as presents.

The survey also found that people think friends, grandparents and aunties give the worst presents, while mums, girlfriends and daughters were the best at Christmas present-giving.

Andrew Jones, product director at Barclays Current Account and Savings, said: “If we gave people the opportunity to choose what they want, we could all save some Christmas stress and help to declutter our houses.

"Almost a third of the people we surveyed said they would rather receive tokens or money than an unwanted gift and 13 per cent even said they would rather not have anything. The Barclays Gift Card can be loaded with a sum of money and spent as a VISA Electron card in thousands of places on whatever the recipient chooses.”
