Brits 'stay in' over New Year's

As the credit crunch takes its toll, an increasing number of Britons are shunning parties and elaborate events for cheaper nights in.

In a warning to the events industry to make itself more appealing and affordable, new research from mixxit.co.uk, reveals that there was a 49 per cent fall in the number of people going out over the festive period.

A quarter of respondents said they would rather entertain guests in their own homes rather than go out to a party.

The rise of programmes such as Come Dine With Me is making it more appealing for people to show off their hosting skills in their own homes.

Some 43 per cent of respondents said they wanted to impress guests with an unusual and original evening.

Wayne Collins, celebrity bartender and online host of mixxit.co.uk, said: "With the country feeling the pinch, it's little surprise that home hosting is replacing conspicuous consumption.
"Home entertaining has been on the rise over recent years but the trend has been boosted by people looking to save money. But that doesn't mean you have to comprise on fun or standards."
