Britons are intending to spend an estimated £11.85 billion in the run-up to Christmas, according to a new survey.
Research from Sainsbury's found that this year UK consumers are planning to spend £2.7 billion more over the period compared to last year.
Around 18 per cent of the total is going to be put on plastic, constituting around £2.1 billion on credit cards, the survey found.
Some 8.6 million people plan to put half of the money they are spending on Christmas cards, festive treats and the Christmas party on their credit cards - up from 6.5 million last year.
The study also revealed that around 1.4 million people intend to spend more than £1,000 in the week before Christmas, while 4.4 million will be spending between £501 and £1,000.
