Couples 'cashing in' on wedding day

British couples are breaking with tradition and requesting cash rather than gifts as wedding presents, a new survey reveals.

A study by website weddingchaos.co.uk revealed that 54 per cent of the 500 couples would ask for money or vouchers.

The shift has occurred because of a rise in the number of couples living together before they get married, which means they often already have the traditional wedding presents in their homes, including crockery, toasters and wine glasses.

One in three couples still said they would like the traditional gifts on their wedding day, the survey found.

Wedding guest etiquette has evolved in recent years, with the concept of even a 'wedding list' unheard of in the 1970s.

But today, asking for money is becoming commonplace, with even Victoria and David Beckham having asked for vouchers or cash from guests on their big day.

While frowned upon by many of older generation Britons, giving cash is a popular practice in many parts of Europe and Asia, including Poland, Cyprus, the Philippines, China, Japan and Italy.
