Space weddings to become reality in 2011

From 2011, couples will be able to stage their own wedding in space, thanks to a new joint American and Japanese venture.

US-based Rocketplane has teamed up with First Advantage to offer wedding packages in jets up to 70 miles above the earth's surface.

The privilege doesn't come cheap, however, as space weddings aboard Rocket Plane XP are expected to cost a cool £1.1 million.

Ambitious couples planning ahead are now able to book slots on the first flights in three years time.

As part of the premium plan, the bride and groom are entitled to bring two guests, in addition to the priest and pilot.

The wedding dress is included, along with a four-day training course to prepare for the rigours of space.

The newlyweds will be able to party at the firm's spaceport, with a live transmission to friends and family back on terra firma.

Cindy Cashman and Mitch Walling were the first couple to sign up for the unusual deal.

"I came up with the idea over a year ago," explained entrepreneur Miss Cashman, who is a popular author.

"While I was meditating, an idea popped in my head to be the first person to be married in space, so I started taking action to make my dream a reality," she said, the Daily Mail reports.

She found her future groom after making the bold decision, following an intense period of internet dating. ADNFCR-1121-ID-18666762-ADNFCR
