Couples planning to get married should seriously consider having their nuptials on an island in the sun, according to a budding entrepreneur.
Michelle Pierre-Carr, a 35-year-old newlywed from Croydon, is planning to help brides and grooms have a recession-busting wedding by launching her own business.
Mrs Pierre-Carr, who got married to her husband a year ago in Jamaica, hopes to make it easier for other brides to do the same, the Croydon Guardian reports.
She told the newspaper she had found it hard to organise a wedding in the Caribbean from the UK.
"There are a lot of wedding planners around but most of them deal with Europe," she said.
"As far as I know I am the only planner for the Caribbean so we are definitely a niche company."
She hopes that an increasing number of brides will consider having their wedding abroad as it is a cheaper option than having the full do in the UK.
With the average wedding costing £20,000, having a smaller wedding on a beach in the Caribbean could be romantic as well as save the couple significant amounts of money.
Mrs Pierre-Carr said: "You might think that having your wedding in the Caribbean sounds expensive but abroad you can get so much more for your money.
"You have to think of it as a holiday, you can incorporate your honeymoon into it as well and your guests can enjoy a week or two relaxing in the sun."
A study by Mintel found that more than 51,000 British couples were married abroad last year, making up around 16 per cent of the total number of weddings.
