More choice for engaged couples

A change in Church of England law means that more couples will be able to get married in their church of choice.

The new Marriage Measure which was introduced by the Anglican church this month has relaxed the previous strict rules which meant you could only get married in a church if you were a member of the parish.

Now couples planning to tie the knot can get married anywhere in the country as long as they can prove a present or distant link to the church.

Allowances include having lived in the parish for six months, having been christened there or having parents who attend the church.

The measure means that loved-up couples will now be able to choose some of the most picturesque churches in the country to say their nuptials.

Right Reverend Stephen Cottreel, the Bishop of Reading, said: "Getting married in church just got easier. People who are serious about getting married naturally want a marriage ceremony and a setting which is equally serious.

"From today those who have a connection with the church can be married in the church where they have that connection. This is good news."
