Thai weddings aplenty this Valentine's

Thousands of couples will tie the knot in a series of unique Thai settings this Valentine's Day.

In the southern province of Trang, for instance, brides and grooms will say their vows underwater, in quirky annual ceremonies that have now been running for eight years.

On the inaugural Millennium Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony in 2000, 30 participants set a new Guinness world record and the event has been growing ever since.

Meanwhile, the northern region of Lampang celebrates Valentine's by laying on feasts for elephants, including piles of bananas, flowers and sugar cane on metre-wide toke tables.

In the Bang Rak district of Bangkok - known as the 'village of love' - as many as 600 couples are expected to tie the knot today.

The local registration offices have been forced to relocate to a hotel to accommodate the volume of lovers marrying in the area today, AFP reports.

"The number of couples of seeking marriage licences on Valentine's Day keeps rising," district official Somsak Boonsughth told the news agency.

Though not a traditional Thai holiday, Valentine's has been embraced by the country.

It was announced earlier this month that couples who file for a divorce during the "festival of love" in the north-eastern province of Roi Et will be turned down by the local authorities.ADNFCR-1121-ID-18468164-ADNFCR
