Blackpool Tower in wedding venue bid

Brides and grooms with a head for heights could soon be able to get married at the top of Blackpool Tower.

The iconic location is the subject of a wedding licence application and could see hundreds of loved-up couples tie the knot at its summit if it is accepted.

Tower officials said they have made the application as a result of popular demand with many couples keen to have the unusual venue as their wedding location.

While blessings have often taken place at Blackpool Tower, it will be the first time an actual marriage ceremony will lawfully take place there, should the application be granted.

Geoff Sage, general manager of the Tower, said: "We have applied for the wedding licence for Tower Top due to the level of inquiries.

"We have to undergo various checks and procedures yet and there is no guarantee of it being granted, but if it is we will have a waiting list as tall as the Tower itself!"
