Fathers of the groom 'most likely to drop a clanger'

The father of the groom is the most likely to act inappropriately at a wedding, according to a new survey.

Most people think that the best man is most likely to slip up on the Big Day, providing an unsavoury speech or getting a bit tipsy.

But a survey by speechforyou.com revealed that the groom's best mate is unfairly maligned.

Geoffrey Harris, director of the website, said: "If you are worried about the rogue element at your wedding, keep your eye on dad.

"He's the one more likely to drop a clanger, not the best man."

Fathers of the groom can often relax more at the wedding as they probably have fewer responsibilities than the father of the bride.

Around 46 per cent of fathers of the groom responding to the survey said their speaking responsibilities did not stop them from enjoying the wedding, compared to 64 per cent of best men and 64 per cent of fathers of the bride.

But the survey also found that best men are most likely to look for some Dutch courage to help them do their speech.

Some 74 per cent of them consume alcohol before speaking, compared to 53 per cent of fathers of the bride and 47 per cent of grooms' dads.
