The cost of attending a wedding has become so great that 1.6 million Brits have admitted going into debt to go to a friend or loved one's Big Day.
Research by CreditExpert.co.uk revealed that six per cent of us have gone into the red to go to a wedding day, with costs such as hen and stag weekends, presents and outfits adding up.
An increasing number of loved-up Britons are choosing to get hitched abroad, causing resentment among many of their guests who are not happy at having to fork out so much money.
Some 44 per cent of overseas wedding guests in the survey said they resented having to pay so much money to go to the ceremony abroad.
On average, a hen night or stag do will cost £130, while people will spend £70 on a wedding gift, £64 on clothes, £49 on travel and £48 on accommodation.
Around 13 per cent of people said they have had to turn down some wedding invitations because they simply cannot afford to go.
Londoners are spending the most amount of money, averaging between £400 and £500 on each Big Day.
Those north of the border drink the most at weddings with six per cent of Scottish people spending between £100 and £200 on drink.
Jim Hodgkins, managing director of CreditExpert, said: "Weddings are a time to celebrate but it's clear that people are increasing their financial stress and spending money they don't have simply in order to be there.
"The cost of getting married and attending other people's weddings is often underestimated, but it's a significant outlay that often hits hardest those who are first time property buyers or those still burdened by student debt. As a result, attending lots of weddings in a short space of time can mean your credit rating is adversely affected."
