Rise of UK hen and stag nights

Brides and grooms-to-be are choosing to hold their pre-nuptial parties in Britain, in light of the credit crunch.

Couples about to tie the knot have increasingly opted for foreign hen and stag nights, with destinations such as Amsterdam, Riga and Barcelona growing in popularity.

But according to a study by Travelodge, there has been a major increase in the number of stag and hen party bookings in cities in the UK.

Some 84 per cent of respondents to its survey of 4,000 people said they would be attending pre-nuptial parties in home shores.

The study also found that the average man will go to two stag nights a year, forking out £370.21 each time.

Women will spend £323.41 on just one hen night a year, according to the research.

Commenting, Mark Kemp, reservations director at Travelodge, said: "We generally have a steady stream of hen and stag bookings each year but this year we have seen a dramatic rise in our group bookings are for a pre-wedding celebration.

"Nowadays weddings are a very expensive affair and not everyone can afford a trip abroad in addition to attending the wedding itself. In some cases the cost can exceed thousands of pounds. "
