Like many elements in the preparation of a marriage, the choice of cake can be a difficult decision, but an increasingly important one, according to a wedding expert.
Square cakes are in, insists Anna Pezik, senior editor of the marital advice site Brides.com.
You can't go wrong with ivory buttercream icing, but she recommends experimenting with brown, platinum or black alternatives.
Adorning the cake with flowers is another popular step that the wedding veteran advises, particularly if there is certain flower that has significant meaning for the bride and groom.
"From their colour choices to their tasting preferences, couples want their wedding day to reflect their personal style," said Ms Pezik, the North American Precis Syndicate reports.
"By offering their guests a selection of varietals that pair up with each course throughout the reception - from the appetizers to the wedding cake - couples set the tone of their day and offer guests a memorable culinary experience."
Matching the wedding cake with an appropriate tipple is an acquired art, but an important one, she continued, as the sweet flavours can emphasise the acidity of champagne.
The wine's bouquet should complement the dominant flavours used. A bold Merlot goes hand in hand with a rich chocolate cake, for instance.
